First Demolition were contracted to undertake works at a neighbouring building which comprised six storeys of mixed use retail and commercial space. The scope was a full ‘shell and core’ strip-out, and removal of known ACMs and the dismantling of two steel external fire escape staircases. The asbestos works were extensive; there were numerous locations of non-licensed asbestos works and a total of eight enclosures required to remove AIB. Most notably were AIB panels to the soffits of the fire escapes. Their removal necessitated the erection of two complex scaffold towers to form crash decks at the top lift to enable the formation of polythene enclosures and local positioning of NPUs. After this was successfully complete, the scaffold was progressively struck while the staircases were removed, first by crane and cherrypicker and later by hand using gas-cutting techniques.

Extensive discussions between specialist trades were effective in guaranteeing the safety and performance of high level enclosures
